Cleanse Correctly
One crucial way to control excess oil is to keep face clean by washing regularly. All the accumulated dirt and oil build-up can lead to clogged pores, acne etc. For oily skin, the cleansers/face washes should be oil-free. It is recommended to use the products that contain one or more of these ingredient – Salicylic Acid, Tea tree oil, Neem, Turmeric, and Honey. Meanwhile, exfoliation once or twice per week helps eliminate dirt and dead skin cells and renew your skin’s surface. But you must be gentle and do not scrub your skin in a harsh manner.
Mask Weekly
The masks that contain Kaolin and Bentonite clay, Sandalwood, Fuller’s Earth (Multani mitti) are very good for oily skin as these gently absorb excess oil. Also, the masks with clay or salicylic acid can reduce the oil production in the skin temporarily.
Here are some DIY face masks that help control oil:
Baking Soda and Lemon
Benefits: Maintain the pH balance of your skin, Prevent breakouts, Controls oil secretion, Lighten skin tone.
Step 1. Take 2 tablespoons of baking soda in a bowl. Add 1 tablespoon of fresh lemon juice to it. Mix the two well. The baking soda will start to bubble up, which is normal.
Step 2. Apply the face mask, avoiding the eye area. Rub the mask in slow, circular motions around the oily T-zone. Let it sit not more than 15 minutes. Rinse it off with cool water. Then apply a light moisturizer.
Egg White and Yogurt
Benefits: Cleanse the pores, Shrink the size of pores, Reduce sebum production
Step 1. Break an egg and extract the egg white in a container. Add 1 tablespoon of plain yogurt. Whisk the two into a paste with a hand blender.
Step 2. Apply a layer (should be thick) of the egg white face mask. Keep it on for 15 minutes or until has turned hard and dry. Rinse it off with warm water and apply a light moisturizer.
Wear Sunscreen Always
The fear of greasiness prompts many oily-skinned women to skip sunscreen, which leads to brown spots, pigmentation and freckles caused by sun exposure. It is important to choose a correct sunscreen.
Makeup Apply
Always apply the primer after you have toned and moisturized your skin. Choose a Primer which is formulated for oily, acne prone skin. A good primer can help absorb the oil that our glands produce, which in turn will help in making our makeup last longer on oily skin. The oil produced causes makeup to fade, streak and look all weird if you don’t use a good primer.
Choose Oil-free Mineral Concealers and Foundations. When you apply concealers or foundation with brushes or fingertips, make sure they are clean.
Set your makeup with a makeup finishing spray. It forms a barrier over your makeup and resists oil production. Just a few sprays will help set your makeup. It also prevents you looking all caked up and lets your skin breathe.
Diet
Foods Should Be Avoided for Oily Skin
1. Dairy products such as milk, butter, and cheese contain high levels of hormones (such as testosterone) which can lead to increased oil production and blocked pores. This is why dairy products are linked to breakouts and acne.
2. Refined carbohydrates such as white rice and white bread lose fiber and other important nutrients when they are processed. It means they have a greater impact on your blood sugar and lead to an increase in your oil production levels.
3. Eating too much sugar spikes your blood sugar levels. The body responds by producing more insulin, which in turn encourages the glands to
produce more oil and heightens your risk of oily skin and developing acne.
4. Excess salt/sodium intake can cause water retention, swelling, and eye bags. It can also lead to an increase in oil levels as the skin tries to combat the dehydration caused by salt.
5. Consuming alcohol has a huge impact on your skin, particularly if you’re prone to oily skin. Alcohol saps fluid out of the skin, causing dehydration, which means the skin produces more oil to compensate and this often leads to breakouts.
